Owing to a naming subroutine that has been reclassified from “critical bug” to “core gameplay loop,” every procedurally generated NPC in Elder Scrolls VII spawns bearing the name Preston and immediately informs the player that a settlement needs their help. This includes shopkeepers. This includes guards. On one occasion it included a dragon, which landed, requested settlement assistance, and left.
Overnight, and entirely of their own accord, the Preston NPCs constructed a functioning settlement within the game's code. It has a mayor. It has zoning laws. For the first time in franchise history, the NPCs now issue quest markers to the development team, requesting that the developers assist them.
Engineering has reclassified the settlement from “emergent narrative” to, as of a recent Friday, “our landlords.”
